Stadium Signage: Give Fans Something to Cheer About

Jul 20, 2017

Here are some tips for building excitement, keeping fans informed and creating an awesome environment at a stadium.

Start Strong With The Stadium Gate

The marquee at Wrigley Field. The modest dimensional letters atop Fenway Park’s brick facade. The neon-lit Rose Bowl sign in vintage script that looks oh-so-right in Pasadena. Passing beneath these iconic signs and onto the hallowed ground beyond is part of the fan experience – a baptism of sorts. You have to make it awe inspiring.

Take what we did with the gate at Nissan Stadium. Before, it was a monolithic gray concrete blob with no discernible visual theme. That all changed as Big Visual Group added new elements that fit together from a design perspective. A 35-ton sign, banners, and pole wraps brought a unified theme to the area:

Make Concession Menus User Friendly

It’s frustrating for a fan to wait in a long line only to find out the item they want to order is sold out. We can design a stadium concession sign system that is easy to change based on your inventory and seasonal offerings and much better looking than those tiny black letter acrylic menu boards, increasing the satisfaction of fans, allowing the staff to make updates quickly and fitting into your overall visual theme.

Celebrate The Past and Present

Whether it’s a local high school stadium or AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, banners celebrating past achievements or a current star player is a nice touch. Pennants with the years of championship wins and larger-than-life banners or decals of your players reminds fans of why they remain loyal and gives reasons to cheer loudly.

But Also Embrace Future Trends

Install digital signage and video boards to display scores, scrolling stats and promo messages. They are easy to change and quick to update as your quarterback hopefully torches opposing defenses.

Another trend of modern day sport venues is creating experiences separate from the product on the field. For example, the Band Box at First Tennessee Bank Park, which we helped brand, features several entertainment options including ping pong, cornhole, foosball and shuffleboard, with the baseball field serving as the primary backdrop.

Show the Way

Crowd control is best corralled with a methodical wayfinding system. Showing where seating sections, restrooms, concessions and nearest exits are keeps wandering to a minimum and fans on the right path, not clogging up walkways.

Give Advertisers Some Design Rules

That cohesive, unified theme we mentioned earlier? It can be hijacked by too many advertisers going in different creative directions. If we again use Wrigley Field as an extreme example, you can see the ads in the ivy outfield walls are all green with white text – keeping the look that fans have adored since 1937 largely untarnished when the Cubs became last major league team to put advertising on outfield walls in 2007.

Regulating advertising and promotional displays at your venue will keep the identity of the team at the forefront. Establishing a limited color scheme or font selection can help keep the stadium looking consistent.
