Meet the Team: Jake Swimmer

Never Giving Up

Title: Graphic Designer
Roles: Dimensional Design, Environmental Signage, Sports Branding, 3D Design (his “bread and butter”)
A Big Visual Employee Since: May 2015

A lively and spirited guy, Jake Swimmer has only been a part of the Big Visual Group team for a bit over a year. After joining Big Visual on May 4th, 2015 (insert Star Wars joke here), Jake’s past year has been a fast-paced and productive one.

Jake has 9 years of professional design experience and holds a degree in graphic design and a degree in 3D animation. He started his career in Birmingham working for a small ad agency, but shortly after, he was recruited by a company to work on collegiate and sports branding projects. This is where Jake’s love and passion for sports design and branding started taking shape. After working 5 years in Birmingham, he decided to relocate to Nashville to further his experience in collegiate sports branding. “I’ve learned a lot since moving to Nashville. I’ve learned how to push myself as a designer and a person. After seeing both the good and bad side of this industry, I’ve learned that no matter what, I cannot quit. No matter who or what tries to hold me back, I will always prevail. I want to be the best and work with the best. I think that’s what led me to Big Visual.”

Jake found his place at Big Visual Group, and he couldn’t feel more at home with his current position. “We have such great leadership, with big ideas and motivation. Ryan, Big Visual’s Creative Director, is an awesome boss, and I really look up to him and everyone here — especially all of the design team. Here, it’s not just one person putting in the effort, it really is the whole company,” says Jake with a slight grin that upholds the truth behind his words.

Having worked with a number a universities (University of Alabama, University of Tennessee, University of Mississippi, University of Kentucky, Vanderbilt University, and Notre Dame University to name a few) on sports branding projects, Jake’s past experiences made him a perfect fit for the Big Visual design team, who were gearing up for a couple of big projects with Nissan Stadium and Bridgestone Arena. “Doing all the stuff with the Titans and Nissan Stadium is awesome — definitely one of my favorite things to do here. Our whole team devotes a lot of time and effort to those projects.”

Personal:

The main reason Jake moved to Nashville was to marry Heidi, the love of his life, and this past May 18th marked two happy years of marriage. The rest of the awesome Swimmer family consists of a Beta fish (no pun intended) named Jimbo, a cat named Lucy, and a year-old Great Dane puppy named Mabel — but don’t let “puppy” fool you, she’s well over 100 pounds!

When Jake isn’t hanging out with “the coolest chick he’s ever met,” he loves to play golf, hang out with his friends, and just have an all-around good time.

“Definitely hold true to your responsibilities, but just don’t grow up. These are the paths you choose, so why not make the best of them? If this is the life you want to live, by all means do what makes you happy. It’s not going to be handed to you — you have to be determined, and you have to fight. You have to go out and pursue it. You always have to win.” And from the looks of it, Jake is doing just that.
